That lead should be extended next Saturday when Jermell meets Argentina’s rugged Castano on Showtime. Dan Rafael is the lead boxing contributor for World Boxing News. Caleb Plant of the United States trades blows with Vincent Feigenbutz of Germany during their IBF world super-middleweight championship bout at Bridgestone Arena on February 15, 2020, in Nashville, Tennessee. Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant took to the stage in Southern California to officially announce the championship fight. With Plant fading fast, Alvarez landed a left hook and a right uppercut that made Plant bend over and touch the canvas with both gloves about 25 seconds into the 11th round. The previously undefeated American is known for his tight defence, movement and work behind the jab, a combination with the potential of causing Canelo some problems, as seen during his sole defeat to Floyd Mayweather, alongside wins over Erislandy Lara and Billy Joe Saunders. Oscar Valdez vs. Tank as a 130-pound unification fight would be huge, and could take place on both Showtime and ESPN, but Floyd won’t make it happen simply because Valdez isn’t with PBC.
The encouraging start by the promotion, which brought us Brandon Adams’ knockout of Serhii Bohachuk and Angel Fierro’s upset finish of former 130-pound champion Alberto Machado, is on pause through the fall, Vice President of Boxing Operations Sam Katkovski tells me. Charlo’s body punching knockout of Jeison Rosario was certainly impressive and by gaining the claim of undisputed with a triumph over Castano, he will undoubtedly distinguish himself over WBC middleweight champion Jermall (32-0, 22 KOs), who was sluggish in his June 19 victory over Juan Macias. Jermell is about to unify his division, but Jermall has the ‘0.’ Which one will we likely to see on the pound-for-pound list first? I wanted to be the first one to knock him out," says Benavidez, a Mexican-American fighting out of the Seattle area. "It definitely has been tough, and right when I get these fights, like Uzcategui, he gets popped for steroids. Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) will first meet Ryota Murata in a rescheduled 160-pound title unification in the spring in Tokyo, and, like Alvarez, will have to emerge victorious to keep the third fight intact. It’s sad. Do you think Floyd would one day change his mind and let “Tank” pursue fighters outside of PBC, or will he stick with what he said?
How can Floyd say that his goal is to make Gervonta Davis surpass him, when all the biggest names in the 130-140-pound range are outside of PBC? In talking to the Davis team member, I’d say the pursuit of the best fights possible is in Gervonta’s mind, but he wants assurances that the biggest slice of the financial pie will be his. Plant said he is also ready for the overwhelming media spotlight that will shine on him as he prepares for the fight. They’re still active on social media. Plant, who appears to be extremely confident, has decided to call out Charlo on social media. You would call the guy from Venezuela mediocre? “I think next may be Ca - not Canelo - Caleb Plant,” Benavidez rectifies during a recent phone call with DAZN. Canelo Alvarez has bulked up in new training camp photos as he prepares to take on Dmitry Bivol on Saturday night. Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant weren't supposed to fight until their undisputed super middleweight title bout on Nov. 6 in Las Vegas.
The current WBO, WBC and WBO super-middleweight champion will take on the IBF super-middleweight champion on November 6. In less than a month’s time, the two fighters will face each other in the ring at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. “It’s, 'Let’s have a discussion about the numbers that are in place for both fighters.' We will make an offer to Caleb Plant through the PBC to make that fight for September. So let’s take him at his word for now. Now would be a good time for Plant to take the highly-rated Benavidez up on his offer. All Benavidez had to do was remain champion and the fight was his. Before he could make a second defense of his title, Benavidez was suspended four months and stripped of his belt after testing positive for cocaine in 2018. While he admits he made a mistake, Benavidez also points to inconsistent responses by the WBC. Charlo is an unbeaten two-weight world champion who currently holds the WBC middleweight title. It’s hard to describe Triller as a force given its lack of long-term deals with any current world champions, along with its loss of leading influencer-fighter Jake Paul to Showtime.
